What is lazy eye?

Lazy eye is a common eye condition where one eye has better vision than the another eye. This condition begins during childhood and left untreated can have greater effects on vision into adulthood. Without proper treatment, the patient will rely more on the strong eye which will cause the lazy eye to become weaker and weaker with time. Eventually the weakening of the visual acuity of the lazy eye can cause the weaker eye to drift. This video from the American Academy of Ophthalmology provides a visual explanation of lazy eye or Amblyopia.

What causes lazy eye?

When it comes to lazy eye or Amblyopia, there is not a singular root to the problem. There are a variety of different things that can cause lazy eye to develop. Here are a few of the most common causes of lazy eye.

  • Strabismus
  • Unequal refractive error
  • Cataracts (clouded lens)
  • Droopy eyelid

These conditions can cause a person’s vision to become blurry or reduce their visual field. The person’s brain can actually start ignoring or turning off the signals coming from the blurry eye in order to provide higher quality vision by focusing its energy on deciphering the signals transmitted by the stronger eye. This “turning off” of the weak eye must be prevented through lazy eye treatment in order to maximize vision quality and prevent an eye from drifting permanently.
